The Tonal (1993)
für ein KLANGOBJEKT und zwei Spieler  

          
READING CASTAÑEDA besteht aus einer Reihe von Werken, die ich zwischen 1980 and 1993 komponiert  habe. Ihre Gemeinsamkeit besteht in zwei Entwicklungen, die die Arbeit an diesen Stücken begleitet haben: die Beschäftigung mit Metallobjekten als Klangerzeuger und die Lektüre der Bücher Carlos Castañedas.    

THE TONAL, zweite Komposition des Zyklus, ist für das KLANGOBJEKT, eine von Andrea Atlanti und mir aus Metallgegenständen entworfenes Instrument, komponiert. Die Klänge, welche   dieses 'Instrument' hervorbringt, haben mich fasziniert. Sie wurden zum Ausgangspunkt des gesamten Zyklus.

 Der andere Ausgangspunkt   waren die Texte von Carlos Castañeda über die Praxis der Zauberei bei den Yaqui-Indianern in Mexico. Die anthropologische Authentizität dieser Texte wird von Fachleuten in Frage gestellt. Trotzdem bleiben sie eine äußerst anregende Lektüre, nicht zuletzt wegen der wundervollen Beschreibungen  von Klang, Zeit, Raum und Licht. Noch wichtiger, sie gibt uns  einen Einblick in Erfahrungswelten, die wir  nur ansatzweise erahnen können. Die Zerstörung  der Welt der Indianer, die mit der 'Entdeckung' und 'Eroberung' von Amerika durch die Europäer vor 500 Hundert Jahren anfing, ist in materieller Hinsicht  eher darstellbar.  Wieviel WISSEN, wieviel ERFAHRUNG aber dabei verschuttet wurde, werden wir nie nachvollziehen können.

 Diese Kompositionen  sind keine Vertonungen, es gibt nicht  direkte Parallelen zwischen Text und Musik. Viel eher könnte man sie als Kommentare, als eine Art "Pausenmusik" zur Lektüre der Bücher verstehen.

In my moves into the nagual I perceived my body disintegrating. I could not think or feel in the coherent, unifying sense that I ordinarily do, but  somehow thought and felt. In my moves into the tonal I burst into unity.  I was whole. My perception had coherence.I had visions of order."

 READING CASTAÑEDA consiste en un ciclo de obras compuestas entre 1980 y 1993. Común a todas ellas son dos procesos que las acompañaron: el desarrollo de Objetos Sonoros de Metal como generadores de sonidos y la lectura de los libros de Carlos Castañeda.

THE TONAL, la segunda composición del ciclo está concebida para el OBJETO SONORO, "instrumento" desarrollado por Andrea Atlanti y mi. Los sonidos que este objeto generan me fascinaron y fueron punto de partida de todo el ciclo.
El segundo punto de partida fue la lectura de los textos de Carlos Castañeda sobre la práctica de la brujería de los indios Yaquis en Méjico. La auntenticidad antropológica de estos textos han sido puestos en duda. Más allá de esta discusión, ellos contienen descripciones muy bellas de sonido, espacio, tiempo y luz. Nos da además una perspectiva en un mundo de experiencias que ahora solo podemos imaginar. La destrucción material del mundo precolombino por parte de los europeos, que comenzó con el "descubrimiento" y conquista hace unos 500 años, ha sido ya parcialmente descrita. Lo que nunca podremos imaginar es cuanto SABER, cuanta EXPERIENCIA fueron igualmente destruidos.
Estas composiciones no son "musicalizaciones" del texto, más bien son comentarios, reflexiones acústicas.
